HASSAN HAJJAJ x SOMERSET HOUSE

"IT’S A DISPLAY OF THE FREE RANGE OF HIS CREATIVITY, A DIALOGUE BETWEEN COMMERCE AND ART, HIGH AND LOW CULTURE, OBJECT AND IMAGE, COUNTERFEIT AND ORIGINAL. CONTEMPORARY ARAB CULTURE IS FAR FROM MONOLITHIC. THIS EXHIBITION IS A MASH-UP OF SUBCULTURES, FROM HENNA GIRLS AND BELLY DANCING MEN TO THE FEMALE BIKERS IN HIJAB WHO FEATURE IN HIS ONGOING SERIES ‘KESH ANGELS’. SHOOTING HIS SUBJECTS FROM BELOW, IN A STYLE INSPIRED BY THE WIDE-ANGLE FRAMES OF HIP-HOP AND MARTIAL ARTS VIDEOS, THEY APPEAR ENLARGED AND EMPOWERED."
